NeoChat 26.04.0, released by KDE e.V. as the twentieth consecutive update of its Matrix client line, is an open-source instant-messaging application designed to give individuals, project teams and communities a secure, standards-based alternative to proprietary chat services. Built around the decentralized Matrix protocol, the program lets users exchange end-to-end-encrypted text, high-resolution images, short videos and voice recordings across homeservers while remaining independent of any single provider. Typical use cases range from families replacing commercial messengers to university research groups coordinating tasks and open-source contributors discussing code, all benefiting from persistent message history, room-based organization and optional bridging to IRC, Slack or other networks. The current stable build already implements the bulk of the Matrix specification—room creation, federation, reactions, edits, read receipts, push notifications and cross-device history sync—while deliberately omitting VoIP calling, threaded replies and partial encryption edge cases that are still maturing in the spec. To stay ahead of the curve, NeoChat also exposes several experimental features gated behind feature flags: interactive polls (MSC3381), animated sticker packs (MSC2545) and location sharing events (MSC3488), giving early adopters a chance to test upcoming capabilities before they are ratified. The application is available for free on get.nero.com, with downloads provided via trusted Windows package sources such as winget, always delivering the latest version and supporting batch installation of multiple applications.
